Nutritional Support
If the patient is unable to get the nutrition that they need from eating and drinking they may need/have a tube through which they are fed. Common types are:
- Nasogastric tube (NG tube)- a thin tube that goes from the nose, down the back of the throat into the stomach. The tube is connected to a liquid feed. Tubes are easily inserted in hospital but can be easily displaced
- Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) – a tube is inserted through the abdominal wall into the stomach. This is the most common type of enteral feeding for patients living in the community
