Effects of word length

Three things make a word longer and more difficult to pronounce:

• Syllable structure

  e.g. pho-to,   pho-to-graph,  pho-to-graph-er

• Stress patterns

e.g. tom-ato   tomato,

con-duct   con-duct

• Clusters (two or three consonants together)

  e.g. string

  through,

  scream
