Wheelchairs
- It is important to remember that a patient may be able to walk around the home but may require a wheelchair for walking outdoors and over longer distances
- If a patient has a push wheelchair this will require someone to push it. Self-propelling wheel chairs are available for use with one arm but may increase tone so are not usually recommended
- Electric wheelchairs and scooters are available but the patient will need to have sufficient cognitive and visual/perceptual ability to use these
- Wheelchairs may also need to be lifted into the boot of a car. It is recommended that 2 people lift a wheelchair. Alternatively small whinches are available that attach onto the boot of a car
- Wheelchair taxis are available in most areas
- Wheelchair accessible cars may also be an option. Patients may be eligible for an adapted car through schemes such as motability (www.motability.co.uk)
