Warning signs

• Fluctuating levels of consciousness
• Inability to maintain posture
• Loss from poor lip seal
• Unable to form a cohesive bolus
• Pocketed in cheeks
• Weak voice
• Weight loss
• Refusal to eat or drink
• Some patients develop aspiration pneumonia owing to aspiration of bacteria-laden saliva due to poor oral hygiene
