Comprehension
- Use single key words; give one piece of information at a time
- Speak slowly, use more pauses
- Support message with gestures or visual clues such as a picture or item
- Talk in an area with minimal distractions to get their full attention
- Do not talk whilst they are trying to achieve something. Understanding what you are saying will take all of their concentration and they will be distracted
- Ask questions with a "yes" or "no" answer which can be replied to by words, gestures or facial expressions. Check the response by repeating their choice.
