Aphasia |
There are a number of treatment approaches that may assist patients with aphasia.
These include:
- Impairment directed therapy e.g. Cognitive neuropsychological model that pinpoints area/level of breakdown within the processing and formulation of language; therapy is directed at improving function in these areas. If you want to know more about impairment directed therapy, you can read more in this article.
- Functional intervention and management e.g. Conversational partner that trains the listener to assist the individual's conversation by altering the way they interact i.e. provide prompts, use gestures, writing, drawing, etc.
- Alternative and augmentative communication aids to help with communication, e.g. picture charts. These should be used advisedly because if the person has difficulty finding the right word then they will not be able to find the right word on the communication aid.
