Social and relationship problems after stroke are common. Many patients who have had a stroke, as well as their carers, want to be able to return to the varied roles they had before the stroke and to be involved in their local communities again. To maximise recovery, patients and carers often require advice, information and/or strategies to assist them. These will contribute towards improving quality of life by improving independence and enabling patients and carers to undertake tasks and activities safely.

It is important to recognise social and relationship problems after stroke in order to be able to provide advice and support, or to signpost patients and carers to the relevant services.
