Treatment/Management approaches
- Sensory deficits can be treated in a variety of ways; the OT and Physio will set up a plan
- Sensory Re-Education: This involves exercises such as brushing and massage to stimulate the affected area to encourage sensory return
- Textural Stimulation: The use of differing textures to stimulate sensory feedback may also be useful
- Proprioception Exercises: Exercises to enable the person to be aware of where their body is
- Any patient who has marked sensory loss in the presence of good motor function should be taught how to take care of the limb and how to avoid accidental injury
- It is important to identify any risks to the patient due to impaired sensation
- Any rehabilitation to improve function should take into account any impaired sensation that the patient may have
