How to help

• Give plenty of time

• Use communication aids

• Give sound cue or mouth shape for imitation – if you know what they are trying to say

• Encourage patient to break up words, saying them syllable by syllable, e.g. pres-crip-tion

• Encourage the patient to use a different word, or describe the word they are trying to say
