What can Health Care Professionals do?
Life narratives (Ellis-Hill, 2011)
- There may be a mismatch between how Health Care Professionals (HCPs) see the patient’s world (the observable) and the way patients see their world (hidden).
- It is important to consider the stroke survivor’s past in connection with their future.
- Life narratives are stories we tell about ourselves to ourselves and other people, past, present and future.
- HCPs can use life narratives to inform practice and support people in recovery and rehabilitation.
Activity:
Mary is a 67 year old lady who had a stroke whilst out for a meal with her family. She has good mobility but has mild speech problems. She is a retired nurse and lives alone. She feels as though she doesn't know who she is any more. How could you help her?
Take a few minutes to think about how you could help Mary before moving to the next page.
