Episodic hypertension

• Occasional ‘peaks’ in systolic BP are as important as persistently elevated systolic BP!

• Yet we tend to ignore the ‘blips’ and focus on the mean or trend

• Drug choice:
  • Calcium channel blockers may be more effective; beta blockers less so in managing episodic HT (regardless of effect on mean BP)
