Why is positioning important after stroke?
- The positioning of stroke patients and the provision of appropriate seating may prevent the development of contractures, pain, skin breakdown and respiratory complications
- Following a stroke limbs and muscles can be effected in a range of different ways. This may cause problems not only with the range of motion of a limb but a patient may also experience changes in tone and may also report pain
- Positioning limbs in an appropriate way may help to minimise the effects of the stroke, including pain and stiffness, and may improve awareness and protection of the affected limb, reducing the chance of soft tissue damage
- It is also important for tracking and scanning if the visual fields have been affected
