Weakness is a contributor to impaired motor control
- Common after stroke
- Results in loss or limitation of:
- Function (in muscle control)
- Movement
- Mobility
Initially after the stroke the proportions of patients affected by weakness are:
- 40% in the face
- 50% in the upper limb
- 45% in the leg
- 55% have hemiparesis (at least 2 of face, arm and leg)
6 months after stroke around 50% of patients have some hemiparesis with around:
- 26% dependent in activities of daily living (ADLs) [basic activities, such as personal care, which would allow someone to live alone]
and around
- 30% are unable to walk without some assistance
