Incontinence at home
- Night toileting ability should be assessed in hospital, (so not a concern on return home) and regimen continued at home
- Exclude constipation/faecal impaction
- Review medication
- Emptying bladder/bowel before going to bed
- Appropriate diet and fluid intake
- Sleeping arrangements – two single beds rather than a double
- Set up of equipment is vital to success – ie able to transfer from bed to commode, and back; able to reach bottles; able to turn on light
- Use of continence aids; female/male urinal
- Clothes that are easy to unfasten, some patients find Velcro fastenings easier to use than zips or buttons
- Amount of drinking should be monitored so that a toilet visiting regimen can be set up – adequate fluid intake to prevent constipation
