Driving after stroke
A patient’s ability to drive may be effected by a number of factors including:
- Physical effects of their stroke (such as weakness, paralysis, changes in sensation)
- Problems with vision (such as visual field loss, double/blurred vision, central visual loss)
- Cognitive problems (such as memory loss, difficulty concentrating, difficulties with decision making and/or problem solving)
Patients are not allowed to drive for at least one month after a stroke or TIA.
After one month the patient’s doctor will decide whether they can return to driving.
