What about carer burden?

• Evidence suggests that ESD does not increase the burden on carers, and does not impact negatively on carer mood, health or levels of satisfaction (ESD Trialists, 2005)

• Although ESD has not been shown to increase carer burden, in general:
  • Stroke can have a negative impact on the lives of carers. It is, therefore, suggested that carer strain is assessed using a relevant measure such as the Carer Strain Index
  • Coming to terms with a loved one having had a stroke and subsequently caring for them can have a huge impact on both the physical and psychological health of carers
